A dog coat keeps muscles warm and the fur dry. Cold and wind cause the dog's muscles to stiffen, increasing the risk of injuries and slowing recovery.

A raincoat is important to keep your dog dry in rain and wet snow, while a padded insulating winter coat provides warmth in cold weather and during breaks. The padded coat also works as a sleeping bag substitute when staying outdoors or in a tent overnight. A sled dog coat is well suited for use with pulling harnesses. A jumpsuit, on the other hand, prevents snow from sticking to the fur.
